Justice for Poor money lender
Freedom Studio is currently working with the victims of loan sharks from Susta area of Nawalpur district to strengthen their movement - on their demand for justice and solution to vulnerability caused by exorbitant interest. In Susta, victims of loan sharks belong to marginalized communities who are unable to access formal financial institutions due to lack of collateral and/or illiteracy. Many victims claims that due to high interest rate, which is illicit and unjustifiable, they are unable to repay to loan. However, loan sharks are powerful people in the village and hold strong connection to administration, politicians and hooligans - as a result uses threats, intimidation and violence to recover their money and interest. Such action has resulted in a vicious cycle of debt and povery for the victims.
Freedom Studio has been strategically and creatively supporting the group of victims by providing them effective non-violent civic resistance techniques. Exective Director of Freedom Studio says, 'Now victims knows that whatever happening to them is illegal and they have fundamental right to demonstrate and express their concerns peacefully, government must sit in for a dialogue with the victims and stakeholders to resolve the issues'. Freedom Studio has been providing workshops and discussion forms for the victims to creatively express their problems to the larger mass.
Update: Bill to support loan shark victims is passed.
